Lee Abramson is currently an Executive Vice President and the Underground Risk Manager for Mott MacDonald in North America. He is based in Pleasanton, California and has extensive experience in various aspects of civil engineering with a specialty in rock and soil geotechnical and tunnel engineering in the United States and abroad. He has worked in the public works consulting and A/E fields as technical lead, expert witness, project manager, principal-in-charge, and regional manager for over 35 years. He has had responsibility for over 300 engineers, designers, and technicians. Lee has been a key participant-in or leader-of a variety of major tunnel projects for water resource, wastewater, energy, transit systems, railroads, highways, and other public infrastructure facilities. His direct responsibilities have included all aspects of engineering including planning, analysis, design, construction management, rehabilitation, and inspection. Lee has authored numerous technical books and articles in addition to assisting in the preparation of manuals, and conducting seminars and courses covering all aspects of tunnelling and ground improvement.

Serving as an engineer, lead engineer, project manager or technical reviewer, Boyce has been involved in over 110 trenchless, tunneling and shaft projects. In 2009, Boyce was named “Trenchless Technology Person of Year” and in 2017 is receiving the Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award. Dr. Brierley has more than 48 years of experience with both the technical and nontechnical aspects of underground engineering and construction management.  From the technical perspective, Dr. Brierley began his career with the bachelor of science degree in engineering from Tufts University in 1968 and master’s and doctor’s degrees from the University of Illinois in 1970 and 1975, respectively.  Beginning as a project manager in 1970, Dr. Brierley has worked on literally hundreds of projects involving all types of underground design and construction including soil and rock engineering, building foundations, braced excavations, ground improvement and slope stability. Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. Brierley concentrated on the design and construction of underground projects by managing the instrumentation program for Dupont Circle Subway Station in Washington, D.C. This assignment formed the basis for his doctoral dissertation which addressed the structural performance of large, shallow underground openings in rock. Since that time, he has worked on more than 500 major soil and rock tunneling projects involving design, construction management and consultation for owners, contractors, engineers, public agencies and attorneys.

Stantec Anil is Stantec’s Deputy Tunnel Practice Leader and is based in Walnut Creek, California.  With over 20 years of professional experience, he has provided tunnel, trenchless, geotechnical, and other specialized services using both traditional and alternative project delivery models. He has experience with TBMs in soft ground and rock, road headers, NATM/SEM, and cut-and-cover construction methods, in addition to a variety of trenchless technologies.  Anil has worked on several iconic underground projects, including the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco, California High Speed Rail system, and the STEP tunnel program in Abu Dhabi.  He was lead author on a 2006 paper on the seismic performance of precast concrete tunnel linings, which will encompass part of his presentation on Tuesday.

Bryan Pennington joined the Los Angeles County Transportation Authority (LACMTA) in December 2011. He is Deputy Chief Program Management Officer for Program Management. Pennington’s career has spanned more than 35 years and has extensive program and construction management experience that has focused on managing large, multi-disciplinary teams through all stages of the project life cycle; from planning to conceptual design and engineering through project commissioning and handover. His career has been predominantly in the transit field, although he has experience of tunneling in urban contexts. He has lived in North American for the last 22 years and before that he lived and worked in a number of countries throughout the world.
